Where Life and Writing Meet

My very first published-in-print essay is coming out in the Flourish Motherhood magazine next month (you can preorder it here if you are interested). I submitted this essay back in January, at a time when some family health issues were reaching a head, and we had finally received a diagnosis (that I really, really didn’t want). I was frustrated, and I was angry, and I was so, so tired. So, logically, I submitted an essay on finding peace despite our [...]

The Autumn of Letting Go

As a child, I loved the back-to-school season. It was a time of new beginnings, a time of fresh pencils and crayons, of new clothes and shoes, of new friends and of reuniting with old friends. As soon as the Fourth of July ended each year, I set my sights on September. I would brim with anticipation. (Yes, I was a nerd.) This year, our oldest child is heading off to full-day kindergarten. She never went to preschool, so it’s [...]

The Sad Loss of a Good, Long Life

I apologize in advance for the roughness of this post, but whenever I lose someone I love, I write. Below is a jumble of my processing of yet another death in our family. This is family death number eight between my husband and me in the last two and a half years. Though it was expected, it is never easy. What is this life that we hold on so tightly to? We think we have control of our existence, but [...]

Let’s Talk

It’s been awhile since I’ve really written on the blog. I actually typed up my whole June Wrap-Up and July goals at the end of June, but I never hit publish. It, oddly, didn’t seem like the time to publish it. I added future goals to the bottom of that post, but I didn’t think the brief mention was enough for what I wanted to express. So, today’s blog post is going to be a little bit of a heart-to-heart [...]

How do I Write at Home with Kids?

A long time ago, in a house not far from where I live now, was a bright-eyed teenager who dreamed of being a writer. I pictured my perfect life often. I would be published by twenty, and have several books under my belt before I got married and had children. In the midst of life, there would be plenty of time and finances to spend my afternoons in coffee shops writing the hours away. And, when my current life got [...]

Motherhood and Writing: a Christian Perspective

As I mentioned before, I hit 25,000 words on Tuesday. I managed to squeak in extra writing time during a better-than-average nap time and thanks to an amazing husband who took over dinner time duties. I have approximately a 460-word daily average I need to accomplish to hit my goal of 100,000 by September 30th. When I managed just shy of 3,000 words on Tuesday, I had visions of hitting 30,000 words by the end of this week. It was [...]

My Audience of Three

Bath night in our house is the night I get to play the piano. Since last night was bath night, I played. This time, I did an experiment with myself and recorded myself playing. Several years ago, I remember walking through my parents’ house, and I heard my favorite song to play on the piano, Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 9 No. 1. I walked into my parents’ room to see my dad working at the computer, transferring home videos. I stopped [...]
