The Autumn of Letting Go

As a child, I loved the back-to-school season. It was a time of new beginnings, a time of fresh pencils and crayons, of new clothes and shoes, of new friends and of reuniting with old friends. As soon as the Fourth of July ended each year, I set my sights on September. I would brim with anticipation. (Yes, I was a nerd.) This year, our oldest child is heading off to full-day kindergarten. She never went to preschool, so it’s [...]

The MacBook

This is a story about a new MacBook. But, this is also a story of so, so much more. I won’t rewind too far, just to February, right around the time I started this blog. I knew I was supposed to write something, but I didn’t know what I was going to write. In fact, I was procrastinating on writing, and I decided to gather supplies. In my mind, I needed software (Scrivener) and I needed hardware (a laptop). We [...]

Let’s Talk

It’s been awhile since I’ve really written on the blog. I actually typed up my whole June Wrap-Up and July goals at the end of June, but I never hit publish. It, oddly, didn’t seem like the time to publish it. I added future goals to the bottom of that post, but I didn’t think the brief mention was enough for what I wanted to express. So, today’s blog post is going to be a little bit of a heart-to-heart [...]

How do I Write at Home with Kids?

A long time ago, in a house not far from where I live now, was a bright-eyed teenager who dreamed of being a writer. I pictured my perfect life often. I would be published by twenty, and have several books under my belt before I got married and had children. In the midst of life, there would be plenty of time and finances to spend my afternoons in coffee shops writing the hours away. And, when my current life got [...]

Motherhood and Writing: a Christian Perspective

As I mentioned before, I hit 25,000 words on Tuesday. I managed to squeak in extra writing time during a better-than-average nap time and thanks to an amazing husband who took over dinner time duties. I have approximately a 460-word daily average I need to accomplish to hit my goal of 100,000 by September 30th. When I managed just shy of 3,000 words on Tuesday, I had visions of hitting 30,000 words by the end of this week. It was [...]

Just Work on It

For people who know me well at all, this will shock you (or make you laugh), but around the time I started writing my novel, I also started to exercise at least four times a week. For those of you who don’t know, I hate exercise. It’s like broccoli: I hate it, but I know it’s good for me. I found a vlogger who posts workout videos who doesn’t charge for her videos, and she has created routines that don’t [...]

Redemptive Birth

Before I became a parent, friends and family told me that giving birth to my kids would be one of the happiest moments of my life. For many reasons (that I won’t cover here), neither birth held that significance for me. I was not the starry-eyed new mom who couldn’t sleep because she wanted to watch her child who she’d dreamed about for months. I just wanted the sleep. And, I, at times, really wished that we weren’t in a [...]

Nehemiah and the Kinder Egg

This week has been a test of motherhood. There are weeks of being a mom that are carefree and easy going, and then there are weeks like this where everyone is grumpy and in tears by the end of each day. I happily went to church last night for Wednesday Night Bible Study with the sole purpose of having a kid-free few hours. It’s not the best motivation, but it is what it is. I was beat. When our pastor [...]

Perhaps This is the Moment

I am “Mommy” to two daughters. Our oldest is four. She is tall and gangly like her daddy and is often mistaken for being five. From day one she has been Miss Independent. She only needs snuggles if she’s sick. She also decided on her own sleep schedule as an infant. She rarely slept for more than two hours at a time for her first fifteen months of life and gave up naps before her second birthday. She takes a [...]
